Blackbird eBook Anna Carey
This was a great action/mystery. I was gripped from the very start. The whole amnesia thing is entirely overdone, but it worked for ‘Blackbird’ and it took me a quarter of the way it to work out ‘Sunny’s’ role in the plot.It really is a case of you don’t know who and what to trust. That tone comes across strongly in the narrative. It’s disorientating and adds to the tension of the storyline. Sunny, our protagonist, with no memory, framed and chased, strangers trying to kill her – the premise is set up in the first few pages and continues right to the end. I read this in one complete sitting and was thoroughly entertained the entire way.
I found Sunny to be observant, intelligent and possessing great instincts. I would have like to get some resolution to how she obtained these skills. Though lightly alluded to, it’s never explored. I’m guessing all the answers will come in the sequel ‘Deadfall.’
It’s hard to peg the characters, or comment on character development because of the twists and turns of the plot – It is something I’m going to have to wait until completing ‘Deadfall’ before commenting on – as the story ended on a cliff hanger and the story is only half told.
The writing style is easy to read, but thought like it lacked some sophistication – though I feel it would not hit its YA market if the narrative voice developed a more complex structure. So, Anna Carey has written the perfect novel for this niche. It is just my opinion that it could have added a better dynamic if the clues were a little more obscure and Sunny had less support... more Bourne-like to add some more complexity – but it would push this out of its appeal and into a more adult market.
While the premise of ‘Blackbird’ doesn’t feel all that original, it is still an engaging read. It reminded me of a lot of the teen action movies like ‘Tracers’ or ‘Alex Rider.’ Though it was nice to read from a female protagonist’s point of view as opposed to a male one which dominates this genre.
The novel does feel unfinished – there are many clues dropped, many flashbacks out of context that are not resolved. The story ends on a cliff hanger and I’m bummed that I now have to wait to purchase the follow up ‘Deadfall.’ So my advice is to buy both of these together if you have difficulty in waiting to find out what happens.
I feel if there was more resolution, a bit more solid character development this would have been a 5 star read – but because of the feeling of incompletion I am only awarding it 4.Definitely something I’d recommend to younger readers who love cat and mouse, spy, action type mysteries.

Blackbird eBook Anna Carey Reviews
If not for the ending, I would have given it 5 stars. I sincerely hope there's a sequel. Kept me reading well into the night.
great book for my niece she is 13
Great read if you are in the mood for a thriller. I really enjoyed how the author used second person to tell such a fast-paced, action-packed story. It worked well. I also read EVE by Anna Carey, and am impressed by her versatility as a writer. This one kept me flipping the pages all the way until the end.
Shades of Jason Bourne a teenaged girl wakes on the train tracks in Los Angeles, with no memory whatsoever, not even her name. Her only possessions are inside a black backpack, which contain a cryptic warning not to call the police--and $1000 in cash. Her only identification is a tattoo on the inside of her right wrist a blackbird with the code FNV02198. She also has long scar on the side of her neck.
Before we can catch our collective breath, our nameless heroine is racing through the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles, trying to work out who to trust and why people are trying to kill her. She's being hunted--but why? And why does she have memories of being on an island? And how does she know how to evade her pursuers and how to fight so skillfully?
You won't get any answers in this book--you will have to wait for the sequel--but this is obviously a derivative novel and not a very well done one at that. Most off-putting is the second person POV (e.g., "You reach into your pocket and you find--") instead of 1st person "I" or 3rd person "she". It's a strange choice for POV and one that didn't pay off.
This is not a dreadful book, and many teens will enjoy the fast-paced (if highly implausible) action. If you believe in lots and lots of one in a million chances occurring several times in one novel just for the sake of the plot, or are willing to look past them, then you'll be satisfied with this book.
There are a lot of strengths in this novel The pacing is just right to build and maintain suspense, the dialog is tense and realistic, and the Girl With the Blackbird Tattoo is, most importantly, identifiably a *teenage* voice. The adults in this book sound and act like adults and the teenagers act and sound like teenagers, albeit teenagers in a highly unusual and dangerous situation. We quickly come to care about the Girl and about the new friends--or are they friends?--she makes along the way. There are a few implausible moments in the book but they didn't spoil my enjoyment of it one bit.
I was ready to be disappointed with Blackbird because I had such high hopes for it based on the jacket's description (as well as the extremely intriguing cover). I'm happy to say that this book not only met but exceeded my hopes I found it so enthralling that I read all 241 pages of it in one sitting, when I had originally planned to spread my reading out over a couple of nights. In fact, I read sixty pages (one-quarter of the novel) without any perception of time passing; I was *that* immersed in this mystery that Anna Carey wove.
Two points First, the book is written in second person ("You notice the man standing on the corner..."), to which I quickly adjusted, but which seemed to me to serve no real purpose. It didn't make a huge difference in the way I read the book, since I mentally substituted "I" for "you", anyway. Whatever experiment Anna Carey was trying with the narrative voice didn't work out the way she intended. Second, some other reviewers here have said they didn't like the ending. Well, I loved it it was open-ended enough to leave room for sequels yet would also serve as a fitting finale as a stand-alone novel.
Now, to answer your questions
Why were these nameless people hunting the Girl?
What does the tattoo mean?
What's the Girl's real name?
Nice try! I'm not going to be one of *those people* who spoil things in the review. I hate *those people*! Read the book for yourself and find out.
Anna Carey is such a talented writer and I devoured this book with the anticipation on the turning of every page.. Following this adventure of a young woman who wakes up on train tracks and with no recollection of any memory has the only clues of a tattoo that appears to be some code, and the clues in the backpack that lies beside her..
This book is awesome. It is a little Jason Bourne-esque in that a beautiful young woman awakens on rail tracks without her memory and has to trace down who she is while she is being hunted- literally hunted like an animal- by professional hunters tired of hunting wild game. The book is full of "oh snap" moments that leave the reader on edge, not knowing who to trust, or how the series will end!! Great suspenseful YA read!!
"Blackbird" by Anna Carey was an enjoyable and quick read. I loved her "Eve"-trilogy, and was very excited to read this book. Even though it was enjoyable, it did not leave me as impressed as I was with "Eve". The story was good, but it developed slowly and when I don't get any real answers until I'm almost done with the book it leaves me bored. I do not know if I will continue this series, but I definitely recommend you to check it out if you are interested in reading it. The writing and pace is great, as it was in her other books.
