The Things That Keep Us Here A Novel Random House Reader Circle Carla Buckley 9780440246046 Books Reviews

I loved the way hints were subtly dropped that revealed secrets to come in the backstory. The ending minus the prologue was heartbreaking and that gave it an incredible sense of reality. I am still not sure about the prologue but it did give it a sense of the final story
I thought this was a GREAT book! It captured my attention and fed my imagination with vivid imagery and dialog. I could fully picture the shock, denial, acceptance, coping, and, finally, the desperation of all the characters. I couldn't get it out of my mind. This kind of epidemic could strike us any time - What would we do? How would we cope? Would we be as strong? Would we get sick? - and it worked nicely with a movie that was showing at that time. True depictions of a not-so-broken family, each with their own problems and vital personalities. The mother was my favorite, of course, doing what mothers have be doing since the days of wagons crunching across the plains amid storms, starvation and many children.

I hope Buckley writes another, equally enthralling book but right now I can't imagine what scenario would top this one!
This is my first reading experience with this author . I found myself completely engrossed as I turned each page. Found .myself picking characters to like and then as story progressed not liking them. I related strong to how well she knew and portrayed human behavior during flu pandemic I could not believe I would find myself still reading in the early hours of the morning. I especiAlly liked and appreciated the epilogue. A book well worth your time to read.
This is an excellent description of a very small, home-based exploration of the effects of a pandemic. It’s scary. It’s an invisible bit of life that just goes where it wants and and does what it wants and there is no empathy or connection with anything. There is a lot of hurt and suffering here that indeed could change a culture and a nation.
The novel's premise was interesting and thought provoking. The author did a great job building the suspense of a pandemic and the consequences to one particular family. However, I thought too much time was spent on the main character's ex-husband's possible relationship with a younger graduate student. Additionally, the reason for the main characters' marital split was constantly being hinted at and was implausible when revealed. I would recommend the author's other books The Good Goodbye and the Deepest Secret.
Wow. I could not put this book down. Yes, it could happen. I have read about the 1918(?) flu pandemic and that a flu pandemic will happen again someday, not if but when. The same thing was said about a hurricane hitting New Orleans. It never occurred to me that society could break down and the government become incapacitated, leading to chaos. No power? The guys that fix the lines are either dead or scared.....no police, no fire, no gas, no food, and desperate people everywhere.

Very thought-provoking. Makes me want to run to Costco and stock up on water!
This book kept me reading it from the time I opened it until I finished.

The plot revolves around a pandemic flu strain and how it affects one family. The parents have spent the previous year separated, divorce papers have just arrived ready to be signed, when the dad returns back to the family home with his pretty assistant in tow.

The author sensitively and thoughtfully explores through both main and supporting characters the difficult decisions that we would need to face in this type of situation. Does family come before community? How far would you go to protect your family? Is any one family member more important than any other or others? How do ethics and morality chance when a sneeze can be life threatening, utilities such as electricity and water are not guaranteed, and the food supply is iffy at best?

I loved the author's choice to deal with the subject matter on a microcosm level. It made the book far more compelling to me than it might have been otherwise, since that is how we would experience the situation if it were to occur.

A well-written and engaging book. I thoroughly recommend it.
