The Keep Adversary Cycle/Repairman Jack F Paul Wilson Books
I read a lot of books, primarily fiction, horror, vampires, supernatural and paranormal in subject. Once every 6 or 7 books, I'll read something else, crime, dramatic, thriller, etc., I'm blessed to have the time to read 3-4 a week. I can't say enough about this fictional horror book. Being an avid reader, you find that there isn't always quality in quantity. However, in this case, I was definitely left wanting more. It's set during the early days of WW II, and at first centers on a brutal, amoral, evil, SS officer that has been promoted from an assistant job at Auchwitz to the job of starting a new death camp in Ploiesti, Romania. However, before he can settle in this new location, he must stop for what is supposed to be a kind of quick investigatory chore. The Central Command of the Nazi regime has received a "distress" message from a German Army Commander that is hold up in a "Keep" (very small castle), in the Transylvanian Alps, on the way to Ploiesti. The message is very short and states simply, "Request immediate relocation, something is murdering my men".
At this point, the plot branches into three different segments, the aforementioned distress call, an exercise in relationships between a Jewish father and his daughter, and a stranger who begins a trek to confront the mysterious events at the Keep.
I won't go any farther into the plot other than to say that these three segment join together to again form a central plot. There are several underlying themes going on, but the central theme, or examination, is Good vs Evil, and how identifying each is not always "cut and dried".
As I stated at the beginning of my review, this book is more the "exception to the rule", than the "usual, everyday, horror book. The author does a great job of "fleshing-out" the characters. One really gets the sense of the dynamics of the relationships between the characters, and the different aspects which drive each one.
I won't say anything else besides, I can almost guarantee an intense and enjoyable read. Thanks and Cheers!
Side note: You might recognize the title of this book from a movie released in the early 80s. As is usually
the case, I'd read the book first.

The Keep Adversary Cycle/Repairman Jack F Paul Wilson Books Reviews
I'm a little sad that I'm not giving this five stars. I mean there are quite a few reviewers here calling this the greatest horror novel of all time. Maybe these readers stopped halfway through the book and THEN submitted their grade. I wish I had. The first half really is amazing. It's scary, mysterious, there are wonderful characters and its extremely well written. Then the second half comes. The mystery fades, a ridiculous side plot and romance comes into play, the vampire becomes not so scary and when it's over you feel no gratification whatsoever. This is my second book I've read of Wilson's. I started with All The Rage which I thought was brilliant and wanted to go back and read his works chronologically. So now I will give the Tomb a shot....
I really enjoyed the WWII, Nazi-occult setting of this novel, and that was what originally attracted me to it. The first half of the book was great horror material. Ominous portents, ancient texts, and unsolved murders really drew me into the story. I am a huge Lovecraft fan, and the first portion of this book really scratched that itch. Unfortunately, the second half did not deliver on the promising build-up of the first section. The story quickly devolves into a good vs. evil fantasy story (and I am a HUGE fantasy fan, but I felt a the Author pulled a bait-and-switch on me with this novel), and not a very good one at that. The love story becomes much more of a focus in the second half, and it made me want to light the book on fire several times. I groaned at certain passages when Magda was thinking of Glen. When you can take no more, and think she is finally done, she starts thinking of something else then returns to her lust with lines like "But Glenn..." or "Oh, Glenn...."
I would not recommend this book to horror fans. The conclusion feels cobbled together and is not satisfying at all when taken in context with the rest of the novel.
I remember watching the movie that was based on this book, back in the early 80's. I enjoyed it and now it's a 'cult film'. I finally got round to reading the book, and even with the differences to the movie, the majority of the characters are true to the book. I've always had an interest in stories that join the supernatural with either world wars, so this was right up my street! A group of Nazi soldiers take over a keep in Romania during world war 2, not knowing it's already inhabited...
A good read for anybody who likes gothic horror, or has seen the movie. Recommended!
