I honestly don’t even know where to begin.. after reading the synopsis of this book, and just basing it on the name of the novel alone, you would think this book would be filled to the brim with horrific words that would deeply captivate your soul, right? Wrong. It took 407 pages in order for me to get any sort of excitement from this book. FOUR HUNDRED AND SEVEN PAGES. That is out of a total of 438 pages...
What starts out interestingly enough as what you’d consider would be a “cant put this down” novel, turned into a “I wish I was robbed right now and they took this novel along with whatever else” type of situation.
There’s really nothing more I can say that wouldn’t give away the story in its entirety, so I’ll just continue on my everlasting disappointment of this book.
I am only giving this book 2 stars based on the fact that it had SO MUCH POTENTIAL that was so clearly wasted by hundreds of pages worth of absolutely unnecessary dialogue. I feel as though the author was in such a crunch to complete the novel that she just started throwing in full chapters filled with worthless words and details that didn’t pertain to the story in the least bit.
I especially found one of the main characters, Colin, to be incredibly boring, even more so than his fellow main character Annabelle, which says a lot.
I think the thing that bothers me even more is that I already paid for and received another book by this author and honestly I might have to leave the book for a day where I’m utterly hating myself and want to torture myself further.

Human Remains edition by Elizabeth Haynes Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I had a hard time reading this book even though I gave Into The Darkest Corner 5 stars. This was such a dreary, sad, depressing book and it brought me down, way down. I managed to get thru it at a slow pace because it was hard to read but I am prone to getting depressed myself at times, so I couldn't handle this book. I am not surprised at the theme as I could actually see some crazy man talking lonely women into giving up their lives. So, it was realistic to me and depressed me. Spoiler I found it strange that Anabel would succumb to this guy herself even though she had kind of figured out what he was doing. It didn't seem believable to me that she could do it working for the police as an analyst but then again her mother just died so she was weak. My advice is to not read it if you are prone to depression!

This is the third book by Elizabeth Haynes. Into the Darkest Corner blew my mind. Dark Tide left me feeling a bit….meh. Now Human Remains? Mind.Blowing.
This story follows two characters, Colin and Annabelle. Annabelle is an analyst for the police department who finds the decomposing body of her neighbor. After research she discovers an alarming pattern of dead and decomposing bodies throughout the county. Colin works for the city counsel and is…a little odd.
As the story moves along it’s fairly obvious who is responsible for the deaths, so there isn’t a lot of mystery. This is primarily a character driven tale which makes it no less interesting.
What I loved about this story was the idea of how we really know our neighbors. If someone is having a hard time, struggling with a mental illness like depression, a death in the family, physical illness or whatever we don’t know. We make no effort to get to know our neighbors. I especially liked how well Colin was written, getting into his slightly frightening mind and why he is the way he is and the choices he makes.
This book is perfect if you like a bit of a psychological thriller but nothing too scary, and something with great characters that will stay with you long after you put the book away.
I was very disappointed with this book after reading the description. I thought there would be many twist and turns exploring the mind of a killer.
The premise for the story was great but the author could have made the book more mysterious if she had given more of Colins background.
After reading at least forty percent of the book the story started to drag. I also did not find it very believable that the killer would hypnotize the victim that easy by laying a hand on someone body and they would let him take them to their final destination to start the process of decay. I also found Annabel and the other characters very weak in the mind if she succumbed so easy.
The was unfortunately the ending was the most interesting part of the book.
I was quite bored and it took me twice as long to read this book as it should have. The plot takes a lifetime to develop and there are almost "too many words", as if the author was trying to boost page numbers. The lack of chapter numbers was annoying, as I noticed in her other book, Into the Darkest Corner. I must have been high when I subsequently purchased Human Remains by the same author because that one was almost as tedious to get through as this one. I didn't enjoy it through the end of the book and was honestly just glad it was over.
The main character is boring, and never really transforms. She spends her time whining and conforming to whatever situation she's in. She's breakable, at best. The antagonist is predictable and commonplace as a villain. He is your typical child-abused, oppressed, self-absorbed psychopath.
There's a host of other characters that are never developed or affecting of the story line, so it isn't really clear why they are included at all.
Perhaps I hoped to give this author a "do-over" of sorts when I chose this book. I wasn't impressed.
